It seems that I am doomed with regards to visiting the cinema! I had wanted to go to see 'Atonement' tonight but a problem with a 'poorly leg' meant I couldn't get to it! I want to see 'Venus' (the next film) too, but it's on the first Wednesday of the month which is the one I can't get to! Ah well....maybe sometime........

Don't forget the ticket price for the Norbury Cinema is now £4 due to a rise in the hire charges from FilmBank. Please don't let this put you off coming. It is still a great night out at a great price!

"Venus" was well worth even the new raised price! Understandably a 'minority appeal' film that would get nowhere in the mulitiplexes, but Peter O'Toole was excellent (as were Leslie Phillips and the other 'old codgers' - and the young female lead!) It seems the thing now for some of our great actors to be playing the parts of what they have now become i.e. old men! It must save a lot on make-up! I look forwrad to seeing Michael Caine as one in 'Is Anybody There?" when it evetually is released for small cinema showing. Let's hope the Norbury Cinema is still going when it does!

'Slumdog Millionaire' got quite a good house, considering it was a nice evening. An excellent film, I found the soundtrack a bit hard to follow, heavy Indian accents and muffly speakers with, in my opinion, too much bass. When they were speaking Hindi, or whatever Indian language it was, there were subtitles - but not when they were speaking english of course!
Now I should like to see 'Guru' at the Norb!

Re 'Guru' - the film I meant is called 'The Guru' and was made in 2002. It's about an Indian chap who wants to be a dancer, goes to USA to join a relative (who has claimed he was doing very well and is well off, but isn't). He gets a job in films - he thinks he is going to dance, but it turns out to be a porn film. The female star of the film isn't what she seems either - being a psychology student earning money in such films - a fact she has to hide from her very moral strict finance and his family........ our hero is mistaken for a Guru at a party, and his utterings catch on and he becomes rich and famous.. All's well that ends well, right boy gets right girl while wrong boy gets another boy etc etc etc! It's s very funny film, a bit Bollywood, a bit hectic and certainly better than 'The Love Guru' from what I've seen of that, but with some things in common.
PS I am missing my cinema nights while all is dark at the Norb in August!

I managed to avoi.......... that is I missed...... 'Mama Mia' yet again! I enjoyed 'The Duchess' though (wonder just how historically accurate it was?) and am now looking forward to 'The Reader'. If only we could get bigger audiences!

I thought that 'The Reader' was an excellent film. Thought provoking and quote intense at times. Excellent acting, good cinematography - and no violence or excess bad language either.
I'm looking forward to 'Vicki, Cristrina Barcelona' now. Wonder how many we'll get in for that? The title doesn't give much away does it?

All Wednesdays indeed, but no consistent pattern of dates ( eg first and third Wednesdays of each month) Due to other people needing to use the stage, the dates which Stage Committee allocates to the cinema are sometimes irregulary spaced - sometimes fiolms on two consecutive weeks and sometimes with a 3 week gap! As advertising in the local papers is expensive and therefore not regular, the only way to keep track and not miss a film you want to see is by looking at the 'Forthcoming' leaflets from time to time to remind yourself - or by referring to the back of the excellent information sheets issued by the Box Office with every film as it lists as many of the coming films (including dates, length of film etc. etc.) as possible. Although I will no doubt enjoy the pantomime, I shall miss my almost fortnightly 'night at the pictures' !!

Loved 'A Bunch of Amateurs'!! Didn't see D**ned United. Not sorry though, I'm no football fan. Still, I hope there was a good audience for it! 'Brideshead Revisited' next, I hope to get to see that!

I absolutely loathe football! However, I really enjoyed "d**ned United" on Wednesday. It was really well done and an interesting story-line too. It was good to see some new faces in to see it too. Let's hope they come back again and support other things.

Wish we could get a regular film slot, then we could have more films in a season. Hear Hear!

'Changeling' was excellent, if rather harrowing. A true story too. I managed to remember that we had cinema on two consecutive weeks and enjoyed 'The Proposal' too, a very different sort of film - a 'romantic comedy'. Why is it not possible to go back to cinema being a regular fixture on 2nd and 4th Wednedays, or even alternate Wednesdays - with no cinema shows when there is a 'live show' on of course! The Norbury cinema is never going to be able to attract a 'young audience' and our showings are not widely advertised and I am sure that some of our customers who would be 'regulars' miss shows because they forget which Wednesday they are on! The entirely volunteer run Wootton under edge 'Electric Theatre' cinema puts on films (digital and including stereo sound and even 3D!) several times a week with matinees as well. They have a regular 'staff' of 5 volunteers per show and a newly refurbished 100 seat cinema! If I lived nearer I might decide to go there instead!

Oh yes! Forgot to mention Thanks for the return of 'minty cone' ice-creams Jon! I liked the Honey and Ginger that I had to have when the original minties were discontinued, but they are my favourite!

Forget tarting up the seats and spend the money on new loudspeakers! The last film 'Michael Clayton' had a rather 'bass heavy' music background which the Norbury's ancient speakers simple converted into rattles, vibrations and thumps. I heard 2 (of the maybe 20-25) of the audience complaining about the sound quality as they left - and it's not the first time either. I know attempts to put things right have been made, but they have failed. Just go and stand near to the speakers stage right and listen! A good film otherwise, though rather a complex plot that took some getting into!
